Our Code of Conduct

This code of conduct is communicated as guidelines to members and supporters of Open Space Golden who support our non-profit group’s efforts. Adherence to this code of conduct is required of all board, committee members, and volunteers.

OUR MISSION IS FOCUSED ON BEHALF OF THE CITIZENS OF GOLDEN AND THE SURROUNDING REGION

OUR MISSION:
Open Space Golden is a non-profit community organization dedicated to preserving and creating more open space, parks, trails, recreation, and solar garden opportunities in the City of Golden and surrounding areas.  Our efforts are directed solely to these public policy goals.

CONFLICT OF INTEREST OR PERSONAL INTEREST

We will apply the conflict of interest policy set forth in our bylaws not only to board members, but to committee member and volunteers of our organization, when it comes to any activities of the organization that may result in personal gain to such individuals (or their family members or business interests), regardless if their wishes are for or against the objectives of Open Space Golden.

RECONCILING CONFLICTING OBJECTIVES

Our mission is based on our Constitutional First Amendment right to petition the government for redress of grievances. We recognize that, in executing our mission, we may advocate for decisions in the public policy and electoral process that may possibly diminish the financial gain of those who do not support our mission. Such an outcome is not our goal. We will endeavor to use processes of our administrative, executive, judicial, and legislative government bodies to resolve these conflicting interests.

FACT-BASED TESTIMONY AND COMMUNICATIONS

Our communications, our correspondence, and our testimony at public hearings or other public events will be, to the best of our ability, based on documentable fact and analysis. We will make all reasonable effort to avoid exaggerations, unreasonable hypothesis, untruthful statements, or obfuscation, and we will not tolerate that when known. Where possible, we will attribute our facts to public domain documentation or research or expert private research that we are willing to openly share with all parties.

RESPECT FOR OUR OPPONENTS

We will respect our opponents as individual business people and professionals, and we will hold that their personal freedom and right to courteous treatment are values that we share with them. We understand that they may present views that are in opposition to our goals and desires, and we will be reciprocating with conflicting points of view. We will keep this dialog professional and will not tolerate slander, libel, name calling, useless derogatory remarks, or disparagement of any kind toward all involved in this process on either side in our communications or testimony.

RESPECT FOR OUR PUBLIC OFFICIALS

We will respect our public officials and understand that they have a specific role in facilitating the process of development control. They are not our opponents. We will treat them with respect and will follow appropriate processes and protocols in a professional manner. We honor the full body of our public officials as the appointed facilitators and elected decision makers in this process.

COMMUNICATIONS WITH THE NEWS MEDIA

We will make efforts to use all available media channels including mail, press, TV, and social media, and will follow all guidelines of this code of conduct in the use of those media. We will disallow any inflammatory use by our board and committee members, and we will be diligent to guard against our media efforts being used for inflammatory communication.
